Today I made a quick pen and ink drawing in order to test out my new webcam. It appears that all systems are go and I’m looking forward to beginning to work in the space. Unfortunately on June 1st, which was to be the first day of us taking control of the space, our house was flooded so what was going to be our little art and design shop in Prague, Czech Republic soon turned into a refuge. We had over a meter and a half of water in the base floor but luckily the firemen arrived at my house and told me to move everything in our sklep (base floor) upstairs. All of my tools, and art supplies were moved upstairs. By 11 pm that night the entire area had been forcibly evacuated and I had taken up my new residence at Cajkovskeho 22 with only my computer, and my dog Jedi. Being forced to be in the studio was not what I had intended but I treated it as a fortuitous event and slowly sorted through all of the belongings I had taken from a student of mine just two days previous (He had left the country and basically gave away everything in his flat). I found myself reflecting on what it means to have stuff as I went through all of the belongings of someone else and sorted out what I wanted to keep and what I wanted to toss and worried about the fate of all my belongings. Strangely enough I had been searching for silk screens and then all of a sudden I had found three silk screens, a jar of photo emulsion, screen cleaner and four different inks to choose from just sitting waiting to be used on t-shirts. The cleaning continues tomorrow, and will not be over any time soon. The goal is to have the house livable for my wife and baby girl by July. Hopefully then we can start using our studio in Zizkov and get back to normal life. I have faith that soon Jana will be sewing her hand made stuffed animals and painting, and that our decision to start a business/studio/workshop space was the right one. If we hadn’t followed our silly dreams and got the space for June I would’ve had nowhere to sleep so I guess that is a sign that we really need the space.
